The law was enacted in two parts: The ACA was amended by the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act on March 30, 2010.

What did the Affordable Care Act do?

The law expanded Medicaid eligibility, created health insurance exchanges, mandated that Americans purchase or otherwise obtain health insurance, and prohibited insurance companies from denying coverage due to preexisting conditions. The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in March 2010 and is commonly known as Obamacare.
